Stephen Phillips Memorial Preserve
Wilderness Camping

The following guidelines are for everyone’s convenience and will make your visit to the Preserve run more smoothly and hopefully make your stay more enjoyable.

NEW - Payment Policy: The staff of Stephen Phillips Preserve are committed to providing you a space for your camping desires.   Due to growing requests for campsites, we have adopted a new payment policy primarily because of the high demand for sites and the difficulties of re-booking last-minute cancellations.  Please review the following details:

Deposit Policy: A $25 non-refundable reservation deposit is required at the time of reservation for each site held.   Reservations lasting more than 7 days will require an additional $25 deposit for each 7 days held.

Cancellation Policy: All cancellations must be made no later than 14 days prior to your reservation arrival date.   You are responsible for payment of the full base fee if you cancel less then 14 days in advance.  Stephen Phillips Preserve is a wilderness campground setting featuring tent sites, campfires, and lake access.   We must note that – given we have no control of weather patterns (such as rain and wind) that arise – Please be prepared for adverse weather should they arise.

Check In/out: Arrival time is 1:00 PM You must check in or make arrangements ahead of time before going to your site. We will have your permit ready for your arrival so all you need to do is sign it.  If you will arrive after the office is closed, you must call ahead and make arrangements.  By law you must have a permit to have a campfire.  We accept Visa, Master Card, or Discover. Departure time is 11:00 AM.

Covid-19: We will continue to follow CDC guidelines and Maine state mandates as they continue to be updated.

Fireplaces: DO NOT MOVE THE FIREPLACES.  The Forest Service determines where they are built.  Moving them can result in State fines and the termination of the permit.  Never leave a fire unattended even for a few minutes.  Also, it has been our experience that glass and metal do not burn, so please do not put them in the fireplaces.  Please do not peel the bark from Birch trees.  It will kill them.  Firewood can be purchased at the office.

Picnic Tables: If you move a picnic table, please put it back in the original position before you leave.  It is difficult for one person to move alone.

Trash: This Preserve is a Carry In – Carry Out facility.  If you must use the dumpster, it is located in the office area between the two sheds.  All recyclables (aluminum cans, plastic bottles, glass, tin cans with no labels) must be put in our recycle bins.  Be sure all trash is bagged and tied securely.  Please help keep our sites clean and do your part by recycling. Please do not put garbage down the outhouse hole; use the bag provided.

Pets: Pets are welcome.  However, they must be kept on a leash at all times to ensure they do not disturb others.  You are responsible for cleaning up after your pets.  There is a minimal fee per dog per night.  In respect of your fellow campers, please keep dog(s) from barking excessively.  We will need a copy of your dog’s license and rabies information.  Please bring it with you or email us a copy ahead of time.

Canoe Rentals: Canoe rentals are available at the office.  Paddles and adult life preservers are provided.  If you have small children you must bring a preserver that fits them.  Canoes are limited so let us know ahead of time so we can hold one for you.

Quiet Time: Please respect other nearby campers by reducing noise at 10 p.m. Sound carries across the lake and can be disturbing to some.
